 Beowulf Projects and Information

Spreading through NASA, into the academics, research and now even into commercial industry, beowulf technology is shattering high performance computing boundaries. Low cost Alpha based clusters allow researchers around the world to exploit enormous amounts of data and solve complex equations in ways that were before limited by extreme costs and access to MPP systems.

The need for gigaflop/s of sustained performance is real. So is beowulf and the standards being created to support it. Todays clusters involve anywhere from a few to hundreds of Intel or Alpha based systems. Code is being developed today which will soon launch this number into the thousands. We at SPC hope this leads to an explosion of information and advancements in all areas of research around the world.

NPACI Rocks Cluster Distribution, an Award Winning Open Source High Performance Linux Cluster Solution ..

Rocks is a robust mechanism to produce customized distributions (with security patches pre-applied) that define the complete set of software for a particular node. A cluster may require several node types including compute nodes, frontend nodes file servers, and monitoring nodes. Each of these roles requires a specialized software set. Within a distribution, different node types are defined with a machine specific Red Hat Kickstart file, made from a Rocks Kickstart Graph.
